DOLL BONES wins a Newbery Honor Award -by Eliza Wheeler

In early 2012 I was asked by McElderry Books/Simon and Schuster to illustrate a new middle grade story by Holly Black. As if that alone wasn't enough, the story was about friendship, growing up, and a haunted doll! It was a great experience coming up with a fitting cover image, and 10 interior black and white chapter illustrations to go with Holly's story.

And as if THAT wasn't all enough, ALA just sweetened the whole experience by giving DOLL BONES a 2014 Newbery Honor Award! The Newbery awards are given to the authors of works considered to be "the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children".

I worked with wonderfully enthusiastic art director, Sonia Chaghatzbanian, on the project, and she sent me the news this past Monday morning when the award was announced. I'm so happy for Holly Black and the hard-working team at Simon and Schuster.

And might I say, what an absolute thrill it is to see that shiny sticker atop that cover illustration!!
